Status Updates

The bid opening for this Somerset County Engineering project was held on May 4, 2021, and the construction contract was awarded to T.R. Weniger, Inc. on May 25, 2021. The preconstruction meeting was held on July 14, 2021 and work is expected to begin in August.

The Zion-Wertsville Road Bridge, also known as the “Rock Brook Bridge”, located approximately 300 feet east of the intersection of Hollow Road and Zion-Wertsville Road / Long Hill Road, was fully closed to vehicular and pedestrian/bicycle traffic and construction began on Monday, August 9, 2021.

This project began on schedule in August 2021. However, due to the unprecedented flooding and destructive forces of the remnants of Hurricane Ida on September 2, 2021, much of the bridge rehab project materials and the bridge itself were seriously damaged. The bridge remains closed while Somerset County Engineering seeks permits from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and its State Historic Preservation Office.

Reconstruction of the stone arch bridge is in progress and work is moving along steadily. Weather permitting, the schedule outlook has the bridge reopening to traffic in mid-September.
