Somerset County June Recycling Schedule

First Saturday, E-waste & Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Events

Residents are asked to adhere to social distancing guidelines at the events.

First Saturday of the Month Drop-off in Bridgewater June 6
BRIDGEWATER – Somerset County Melonie Marano, recycling liaison, invites county residents to take advantage of the First Saturday of the Month Drop-off event on June 6 from, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, Bridgewater 08807.

Social distancing is required: Residents must wear facial coverings and gloves. Only one occupant per vehicle is permitted. Occupants should remain in their vehicles, but staff will be available at every station to help residents remove items.

Proof of residency is required: A current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address. Pre-registration is not required. No businesses or commercial vehicles are allowed.

First Saturday drop-off events enable busy residents to recycle tires and the usual curbside items in one fell swoop. Residents can drop off up to eight tires – with or without rims – scrap metal, used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and usual curbside materials, including chipboard items and plastic bottles and containers, marked #1 through #7. Chipboard includes gift, shoe, shirt and all retail boxes, as well as cereal, cookie, pasta, cake and cracker boxes without the plastic liners. Posterboard, greeting cards, backing from writing pads and empty, dried-out steel paint cans also are accepted.

Somerset County no longer accepts textiles at First Saturday of the Month Drop-off. Please continue to recycle your used textiles at any local charity donation bin.

Household hazardous waste and electronic waste are NOT accepted at the First Saturday of the Month Drop-off events at the recycling center. Recycle household hazardous waste at any of the five scheduled Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events that are held at different locations around the county. Electronics can be dropped off free of charge on certain Saturdays in Hillsborough and weekdays at the Bridgewater and Hillsborough locations.

Electronic Waste Drop-off June 6 in Hillsborough
HILLSBOROUGH – Somerset County Freeholder Melonie Marano, recycling liaison, invites county residents to declutter their homes of the many electronic items that tend to accumulate. The next free-of-charge Saturday electronic waste drop-off event is June 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Facility, located at 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough 08844.

Social distancing is required: Residents must wear facial coverings and gloves. Occupants should remain in their vehicles with the windows shut until otherwise directed. Residents will also be expected to remove items without assistance and place items as instructed by staff.

Proof of residency is required: A current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address. Pre-registration is not required. No businesses or commercial vehicles are allowed.

Following is a list of upcoming dates, locations and times in 2020 to drop off electronics:

  • Saturday drop-offs: July 11 (due to the Independence Day holiday), Aug. 1, Sept. 12, Oct. 3, Nov. 7, and Dec.5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough.

WEEKDAYS – SITES ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED to the public: Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North County Public Works Facility, 411 Chimney Rock Road – north of Route 22 – Building B, Bridgewater, NJ 08807 and the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.

The following materials are accepted: computers (desktops and laptops), monitors (cathode-ray tube and flat panel), televisions (cathode-ray tube and flat panel), copiers, digital cameras, DVD players, e-book readers, fax machines, MP3 players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), printers, stereos, radio equipment, VCRs, audiovisual equipment, typewriters, camcorders, telephones, cellular phones, circuit boards, modems, telephone mainframes, keyboards, mice, scanners, cables, wiring, power supplies, mainframe equipment and controllers.

Batteries are not accepted. Residents can recycle household hazardous waste, lithium and rechargeable batteries at any of the five scheduled Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events held at different locations around the county.  AA, AAA, D, C and 9-volt batteries can be disposed of in the regular trash.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off June 20 in Franklin
Franklin Township –
Have household hazardous waste accumulated in your home? Somerset County Freeholder Melonie Marano, recycling liaison, invites residents to drop off their items at the recently scheduled drop-off event on Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Franklin Township Sewerage Authority, located at 70 Commerce Drive, Somerset.

Social distancing is required: Residents must wear gloves and facial coverings, stay in their vehicles with the windows rolled up and store hazardous materials in trunks or truck beds.

Proof of residency is required: A current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address. Pre-registration is not required. No businesses or commercial vehicles are allowed.

Household hazardous waste includes banned or outdated pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluids, wet-cell car batteries, motor oil (five-gallon maximum), fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs, ammonia-based cleaners, gasoline, kerosene, mercury switches, oil-based paints, pool chemicals, propane tanks and rechargeable and button-cell batteries.

DO NOT drop off tires, or electronics (computers and televisions), infectious waste, gas cylinders, or smoke detectors. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers will NOT be accepted.
