Police Advisory: Crypocurrency ScamPosted on December 11, 2020
Montgomery Police wish to inform residents of a scam involving cryptocurrency. Recently, a resident was contacted by a male claiming to be from the United States Marshall’s Service. The male informed the resident that there was a problem with the resident’s Social Security Number. The male told the resident that a member of the Montgomery Township Police Department would call with further instructions. The resident received a call from the Montgomery Police non-emergency number, 908-874-3333, which was spoofed by the scammers. Believing that the call was legitimate because it is a valid phone number for MTPD, the resident complied with the scammers. Montgomery Police remind residents that this department and any other legitimate government agency will not solicit any type of payment via telephone, especially payment via cryptocurrency.
