Montgomery Tops NJ “Best Towns for Families” List for 2016

Posted on April 18, 2016

New Jersey Family Magazine has selected Montgomery Township as New Jersey’s #1 mid-size town and as the #2 New Jersey town overall in its 2016 “Best Town for Families” ranking.

Suburban in nature, Montgomery maintains a bucolic feel yet enjoys the cultural influences of its proximity to Princeton University and major cities with lots for families to do, according to the magazine.

“Montgomery’s top listing is no surprise to those of us who live here,” said Montgomery Township Mayor Pat Graham.  “Montgomery’s strong community, terrific schools and beautiful parks and open spaces all make our town a wonderful place to live.   I am privileged to serve this community and grateful to our talented professional staff and the numerous volunteers who so work hard to improve and preserve Montgomery’s special qualities. ”

Among highlights cited in the survey were a stellar public school system, history going back to the American Revolution, lots of green space and parks, and Montgomery’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia.  Parks in Montgomery include the newly-restored 247-acre Skillman Park, which has a wide, two-mile-long trail where kids can ride their bikes, and Montgomery Veterans Park in Belle Mead, with miles of hiking and bike trails, plus a gorgeous arboretum and veterans memorial.

Deputy Mayor Ed Trzaska added, “We all should be proud of the community we built and how we protect it for future generations. Our wonderful residents and township professionals have made this possible. It’s an honor to serve as an elected official in Montgomery and exciting to work on making our quality of life even better.”

The ranking looked at the entire state—more than 500 towns in all—and measured each municipality against a host of important factors, including school district quality, crime rates, affordability, commute times, percentage of families who live there, access to hospitals and general lifestyle factors.

Montgomery was also ranked #1 “Most Diverse” among racial and ethnic makeups of the highest ranked communities. Here is NJ Family magazine’s “Most Diverse” list:

Deputy Mayor Ed Trzaska shared his personal experiences, stating, “As a father of a multi-cultural family, I am proud to see Montgomery’s diversity recognized as well.  Our daughter was born in China and it’s wonderful to have so many events in town for us to experience the Chinese culture, including those at the local HuaXia School.  Montgomery is represented by many diverse backgrounds, but we are one unified community.”

According to New Jersey Family magazine, “studies show that exposure to diversity at an early age boosts cognitive development, learning, and social skills.”
