January Recycling Calendar: Holiday Closing, First Saturday & E-Waste Drop-offs

The January Recycling Calendar has important information about holiday closings, pickup delays and drop-off events.

 

First Saturday of the Month Drop-off in Bridgewater Jan. 5       

BRIDGEWATER – Somerset County Freeholder Brian G. Gallagher, recycling liaison, urges residents to take advantage of the next First Saturday of the  Month Drop-off event on Jan. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. Proof of residency is required (a current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address). Pre-registration is not required. No businesses or commercial vehicles are allowed.

First Saturday drop-off events enable busy residents to recycle tires and the usual curbside items in one fell swoop. Residents can drop off up to eight

tires – with or without rims – scrap metal, used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and usual curbside materials, including chipboard items and plastic bottles and containers marked #1 through #7. Chipboard includes gift, shoe, shirt and all retail boxes, as well as cereal, cookie, pasta, and cake and cracker boxes without the plastic liners. Also accepted, are poster board, greeting cards, backing from writing pads and empty, dried-out steel paint cans.

Somerset County no longer accepts textiles at First Saturday of the Month drop-offs. Please continue to recycle your used textiles at any local charity donation bin.

Canned goods and non-perishable food donations for needy residents are welcome at First Saturday of the Month drop-off events or put canned goods in a plastic bag on your usual recycling pickup dates. Items are delivered to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.  Perishable items and food in glass containers are not accepted.

Household hazardous waste and electronic waste are not accepted on First Saturday of the Month drop-off events at the recycling center. You can recycle household hazardous waste at any of the five-scheduled Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events held at different locations around the county. Electronics can be dropped off free of charge on certain Saturdays in Hillsborough and weekdays at a Bridgewater and Hillsborough location.

Electronic Waste Drop-off Jan. 5 in Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH – Somerset County Freeholder Brian G. Gallagher, recycling liaison, urges county residents to declutter their homes of electronic items that have accumulated. The next free-of-charge Saturday Electronic Waste Drop-off event is Jan. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Facility at 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844. Proof of residency is required (a current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address). Pre-registration is not required. No businesses or commercial vehicles are allowed

Following is a list of e-waste drop-off dates, times and locations in 2019:

  • Saturday drop-offs:  8 a.m. to 2 p.m. located at the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844 on Jan. 5, Feb. 2,  March 2, April 6, May 4, June 1, July 13 (due to the July 4th holiday), Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7.
  • Weekday drop-offs:  Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., located at North County Public Works Facility, Building B, 411 Chimney Rock Road – north of Route 22 – Bridgewater, NJ 08807 and the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.

The following materials are accepted: computers (desktops and laptops), monitors (cathode-ray tube and flat panel), televisions (cathode-ray tubes and flat panels), copiers, digital cameras, DVD players, e-book readers, fax machines, MP3 players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), printers, stereos, radio equipment, VCRs, audiovisual equipment, typewriters, camcorders, telephones, cellular phones, circuit boards, modems, telephone mainframes, keyboards, mice, scanners, cables, wiring, power supplies, mainframe equipment and controllers.

Batteries are not accepted:  Residents can recycle household hazardous waste including lithium and rechargeable batteries at any of the five scheduled Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events held at different locations around the county.  AA, AAA, D, C and 9-volt batteries can be disposed of in the regular trash.

Recycling Pick-up Date Adjusted for New Year’s Day

BRIDGEWATER – The Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. Recycling pickups in Hillsborough and Millstone will be moved to Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Due to the holiday, some recycling pickups scheduled in Somerset County during the week of Jan. 1 may be delayed. Residents are asked to leave their recyclables at the curb.  Remaining collections will be completed as soon as possible. The Somerset County Recycling Division thanks residents for their patience and understanding.

County offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1, for New Year’s Day and Jan. 21 for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.  The Recycling Center will be closed Jan. 1 but will be open on Jan. 21.  Recycling pickups will proceed as scheduled on Jan. 21.
