(For info on Sewer Utility Charges, see below)
Taxes are paid at the tax collector’s office or by on-line payment. Tax bills are payable quarterly typically on the 1st day of February, May, August and November, after which date they are delinquent and subject to interest. Interest will be charged on all payments made more than ten (10) days after the due date.
A payment will not be applied towards an account until it is in physical possession of the Township, regardless of postmarked date. If mailing your payment, allow sufficient time for the mail to arrive prior to end of grace period to avoid interest charges.
Furthermore, the Township of Montgomery must deposit all checks that are received within 48 hours of receipt. New Jersey State Statute requires this. Therefore, the Township cannot hold any checks for a period of time; therefore, the Township cannot accept postdated checks.
Unpaid taxes remaining by the 1st day of February, May, August or November are subject to interest at the rate of 8% per annum up to $1500.00 and 18% per annum over $1500.00. Once the 18% per annum has been established it will remain at 18% until the outstanding amount is zero. Montgomery Township provides a 10 day grace period for payment of taxes. However, if the 10 day grace period is exceeded the interest accrues from the 1st of the month that the payment is due. A penalty of 6% will be charged on any delinquency in excess of $10,000.00 if not paid by the end of the fiscal year.

Senior citizen and veteran’s deductions require an application from the Tax Assessor’s office.

Sewer Utility bills are paid by mail, at the tax collector’s office or by on-line payment. Sewer utilities are payable semiannually on June 1st and September 1st and are subject to the same rate of interest as property taxes. Interest will be charged on all payments made more than ten (10) days after the due date, which is found on the bill. Bills will typically be mailed out by the end April.
If you have any questions, you can contact the Tax Collector’s Office at 908-359-8211 ext. 2223.
Sewer Fee Calculation Method
Sewer fees are based upon a utility user’s yearly water use multiplied by a universal rate, set by sewer system operation costs and necessary maintenance and upgrades. Water use is taken from the previous year’s measurement, as reflected on your water bills, which the township obtains, or meter readings. A detailed explanation of the calculation method is found on our:
Sewer Rate Calculator
A simple calculator which can assist you in calculating your sewer fee based on your water usage of the previous year is accessible from the following link:
2020 Sewer Fee Calculator (Download 2020 Excel Sewer Fee Calculator)
Note: The calculator has two columns you may use depending on whether your NJ American Water bill reads in centum cubic feet (CCF) or 1,000 gallons of water used per billing period. You can only fill in one entry (CCF or 1,000 gallons) for any given month. If you used 10 CCF, enter 10. If you used 7,000 gallons, enter 7. If your property has a private water source (i.e. well water) and you have not installed a water meter, then put 67 in the 1,000 gallons January row and leave the other months blank.”
For your convenience an after-hours drop box for tax & sewer payments only has been installed at the main entrance of the Municipal Building. Payments left in the drop box will be posted as of the next business day.
