SENIOR SEWER PLANT OPERATOR

Full-time position with benefits package.   Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Wastewater Operations in Public Works the Senior Sewer Plant Operator will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of sewage treatment plants.  Work is performed in accordance with procedures and policy guidelines set forth by the Superintendent of Public Works or another appropriately designed supervisor to whom unusual and emergency problems are referred.  This position reports directly to the Director of Wastewater Operations and may direct the work of other Sewer Department employees.

Job Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Makes regular inspections of plant and equipment to ascertain that it is in proper operation;
  • Monitors records;
  • Gauges meters and other plant testing and measuring devices to ensure proper quality of effluent;
  • Makes changes or adjustments in plant operations as required to improve the treatment process;
  • Keeps abreast of professional developments in wastewater treatment fields;
  • Keeps records and prepares reports;
  • Performs laboratory tests when required;
  • Starts, stops and makes repairs to pumps, motors and equipment;
  • Works overtime as needed or required;
  • Performs other work as required or assigned, most notably in the collection system, pump stations or any of the other sewage treatment facilities;
  • Performs the tasks of Sewer Plant Operator I, Sewer Maintenance Man, or Sewer Laborer when not engaged in Senior Sewer Plant Operator activities;
  • Full responsibility for the operation of an S3 treatment plant, including Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMR’s) Waste Characterization Reports (WCR’s) and Residual Transfer Reports (RTR’s).

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of sewage treatment plant principles and operating practices;
  • good mechanical ability;
  • some knowledge of laboratory procedures with respect to the testing of wastewater

Desired skills and knowledge

  • Four (4) years of demonstrated success in the operation, repair and maintenance of sewage treatment plants.

Required Education/Certification/License

  • Possession of an S3 Treatment Operator’s License issued by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection;
  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the job

Desired Education/Certification/Licenses

  • CDL Class B with Tanker Endorsement;
  • Successful completion of basic and advanced water and wastewater courses offered by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection

LABORER / CLEAN COMMUNTITES – ROADS DEPARTMENT

Full-time position with benefits package.   Tuesday-Saturday with seasonal hours.  Position is being funded through the annual Clean Communities Grant program.  Continued Employment will be contingent upon annual grant funding.  Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks including manual labor and some operation of automotive and power-driven equipment, in the maintenance of roads, drainage systems, sewer systems, sewage treatment plants, parks and public areas and buildings.  Works under the direct supervision of the Roads Foreman, or other appropriately designated supervisor, who lays out the details of specific assignments or establishes routine procedures which are followed.

Job Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Loads, lifts and moves supplies, furniture and equipment;
  • Digs trenches and does manual grading;
  • Collects rubbish and other refuse;
  • Cuts grass, trims hedges, waters lawns, flowers and vegetable beds;
  • Loads/unloads trucks;
  • Shovels snow, gravel and sand;
  • Whitewashes walls;
  • Mixes cement and mortar;
  • Places forms used in concrete work;
  • Cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines and weeds;
  • Cuts down trees, digs out stumps of trees / digs out and destroys poisonous vines, weeds and undergrowth;
  • Weeds flower beds;
  • Pries and hammers apart sections of wall and roof;
  • Works on athletic fields (lining, marking, repairing equipment);
  • Loads debris into truck for removal;
  • Sorts, piles and cleans salvageable brick, stone, lumber and metal work;
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the Department, office or related units;
  • Works overtime as required;
  • Must be available for snowplowing and salting, as required;
  • Performs other work as required or assigned; may be required to work with other Divisions of Public Works.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • work well with both fellow staff and supervisory personnel;
  • understand and carry-out oral and written instructions
  • perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time
  • work under varying (and sometimes extreme) temperatures and weather condition

PART-TIME ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR – CONSTRUCTION / CODE ENFORCEMENT

Under the direction of the Electrical Sub-Code Official and the Construction official, performs Electrical Inspections of all new electrical installation work as required by the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code within the Township for compliance with permitted plans, Local, State and Federal ordinances and law. Under direction will also perform occasional plan review in conformance with the UCC.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs field inspections and plan review of all electrical installations in residential and commercial buildings for compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and other applicable ordinances and laws;
  • Performs electrical inspections in construction projects and existing buildings for conformance with the minimum safety standards under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and other applicable ordinances and laws;
  • Performs occasional plan review for compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code;
  • Interacts with local utilities provider to obtain power supply to new construction or as needed for improvements to existing structures;
  • Prepares and serves violation notices, stop work orders and unsafe structure notices for the Electrical Sub-Code Official under direction of the Construction Official;
  • Prepares reports on inspection results and logs results into computer system under the direction of the Electrical Sub-Code Official;
  • At times, under the direction of the Electrical Sub-Code Official and/or Construction Official, will have to interact with architects, engineers, contractors and applicants to discuss and resolve, if possible, all issues related to building projects;
  • Responds to requests for information from the general public under the direction of the Electrical Sub-Code Official;
  • Will be required to learn all Departmental processes and policies for inspection requirements;
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • New Jersey Uniform Construction Code regulations;
  • Electrical installation methods and materials;
  • Basic understanding of normal office work programs including MS Office Suite

Required Education/Certification/License:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Three (3) years’ experience as an inspector; or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities;
  • ICS & HHS licenses.

Desired Education/Certification/License:

  • Electrical Sub-Code License;
  • College coursework or degree in related field

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain of construction sites;
  • Ability to climb a ladder, enter a sewer or water trench or excavation, stoop, kneel and or crawl;
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel or climb;
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds;
  • Ability to perform approximately 8-12 inspections on construction sites per day;
  • Vision and hearing adequate to perform essential job functions;
  • Ability to speak clearly.
