MONTGOMERY HEALTH DEPT. MESSAGE
What is Contact Tracing, and Why Do We Need it?
Our public health nurses continue to conduct contact tracing in our community. What is contact tracing and why do we need to do it? Contact tracing helps us find out who might have a contagious illness, and who might be at risk of catching it. Public Health investigators work with our residents to help keep them and those around them safe.
The Montgomery Township Health Department (MTHD) is asking people who receive Health Dept. calls to please accept or return these important calls.
Health Department officials are contacting individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 or those who have been reported as close contacts. You are urged to please return calls of Health Department officials especially if you have tested positive, or know someone who has.
These phone calls by officials will be made from a local landline or mobile phone number.
How contact tracing works
MTHD is updated daily by the New Jersey State Department of Health about newly confirmed cases of COVID-19. Then:
- The patient is contacted by phone. If we cannot reach them by phone, information is delivered to their address.
- An interview is conducted by phone with the patient regarding the disease, and education is provided about caring for themselves and family members.
- The patient provides the Health Department with a list of possible close contacts and those people are interviewed and provided education and instruction on how to reduce the spread of the virus.
- The cases (not the contacts) are followed by the Health Department until the patients meet state criteria for release of care when they are no longer contagious.
Contact tracing helps identify new cases quickly so they can be isolated to stop further spread of infection in a community. Contacts may not develop illness based on exposure level, but it is important for these calls to be accepted so that important public health information can be shared to help keep our community safe.
