A Willow Oak Tree was planted in Mill Pond Park by the Montgomery Shade Tree Committee in celebration of Arbor Day and a brief dedication ceremony was held on April 9. Mayor Devra Keenan, Township Committee person Shelley Bell, Montgomery Township Administrator Donato Nieman, and Shade Tree Committee representatives Larry Koplik and Sarah Roberts were present for the ceremony.
The Shade Tree Committee has planned other festivities in April to celebrate Arbor Day. Throughout April, a contest at Mary Jacobs Library for young and old involves a guessing game: “Can you guess the number of seeds? Can you tell which tree they came from?” The entry with the closest seed count (and the correct name of the tree) will win a copy of the Eyewitness Guide to Trees.
In addition, the Shade Tree Committee gave a virtual workshop to all 3rd and 4th grade students at the Village School. The children were given a 2-foot fall-blooming native witch-hazel seedling for planting in their yards. They were shown a video and taught how to handle the trees and how to plant them. A general “tree talk” stressed the functions of trees in the environment and what the children can do to make a change for the better. The program is prepared and run annually by the Montgomery Township Shade Tree Committee and involves many volunteers.
