Equipment Operator 1 – Parks – Montgomery Township. Candidate must be able to perform semi-skilled tasks for the construction, maintenance and improvement of facilities, equipment and grounds at assigned parks, recreation areas, historic sites and any other Township owned property. Operates one or more types of automotive or power-driven equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations; does related work as required. Works under the direct supervision of the Parks Foreman, or other appropriately designated supervisor, who lays out the details of specific assignments or establishes routine procedures. Applicant MUST possess a valid NJ Class B Commercial driver’s license. Starting salary for this position is $19.11 per hour as per Union contract. Full time w/benefits.  

Job Duties / Responsibilities:

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of automotive equipment and power-driven equipment used in the maintenance and repair of roads, drainage systems, sewer systems, sewage treatment plants, parks public areas and buildings, and other facilities as assigned.  The equipment operated by employees in this class requires the use of skills which are acquired through experience and training.  Assignments are outlined in detail and standard procedures are followed in accomplishing the work.  An Equipment Operator I works under the supervision of a foreman or other appropriately designated supervisor, who periodically inspects the work for safety and economy of operation.

Examples of work are: (these assignments are not all inclusive and other duties may not be listed)

  • Mows and maintains park and open space areas; mows lawns; weeds lawns; cleans and maintains courts and appurtenances; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
  • Operates landscaping equipment and performs a variety of grounds keeping tasks, athletic field maintenance.
  • Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance of drinking fountains and restrooms.
  • Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces outdoor tables and slabs.
  • Performs minor unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance of open space structures such as restrooms, shelters, maintenance sheds, etc. (interior or exterior) by performing custodial, maintenance, painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
  • Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest, weed control of parks, and open spaces.
  • Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
  • Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
  • Cleans and maintains roadways and walkways in parks and buildings, and parking areas related to different recreational areas.
  • Assists in the construction of new open space facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
  • Operates dump trucks, transporting sand, bituminous concrete, stone, gravel, dirt and other materials.
  • Operates striping machine; painting lines on street and parking areas in parks and athletic fields.
  • Makes routine maintenance and safety checks on vehicles and equipment prior to operation and reports problems to supervisor.
  • Operates tractor with mower attachment for park pathways or open space.
  • Plows snow with dump trucks, and operates material spreaders from those trucks.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks and makes minor repairs to equipment. 
  • In training and emergency situations, operates front-end loader.
  • When not engaged in Equipment Operator I activities, performs the tasks of a Laborer.
  • Makes routine maintenance and safety checks on vehicles and equipment prior to operation and reports problems to a supervisor.
  • Performs minor equipment repairs.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a positive informative manner, refers inquiries to proper personnel if needed
  • Properly follows OSHA safety procedures.
  • Works overtime as required.
  • Must be available for snowplowing and salting; as required.
  • Maintain open space land and pathways.
  • Performs other work as required or assigned; may be required to work with other departments in the Township.

Education / Certification / License Required:

Valid NJ State motor vehicle driver’s license

Commercial Driver's License, Class B

 

Physical Requirements:

Physical ability, strength and stamina to perform labor-intensive work

Hearing and vision adequate to perform essential functions of position.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate the English language.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Effective 9/1/11, all employees of State and local government must reside in the State of NJ, unless exempted.
