A Day at the Ball Game!

A Day at the Ball Game!

Posted on August 23, 2019

Montgomery families with children who have special needs had a wonderful day at the Somerset Patriots on August 14, courtesy of Montgomery Twp. Police, their local PBA chapter, the owner of the Somerset Patriots, and a community-minded donor.  The families watched a Somerset Patriots Game in the owner’s box at the stadium in Somerset, enjoyed lunch, and a few lucky kids even caught foul balls.  The Patriots beat the Lancaster Barnstormers 4 to 3. A highlight was a visit from mascot “Sparky,” named in honor of the Somerset Patriots’ manager emeritus, Sparky Lyle of Yankees’ fame.

“The ball game brought an amazing sense of joy and wonder to the special needs children and their families,” said attendees Raman and Jessica Kia, parents of Cyrus, Cameron and Maximus. “The Police department not only serve and protect Montgomery daily, they also find the time to be leading agents of positive change in the community.”

The idea for the event started when computer consultant Mitch Feather won the owner’s luxury box at a silent auction and generously decided to donate the prize to the Montgomery Police.  But Captain Tom Wain and Lt. Tom Frascella thought of a better idea and with the help of Raman Kia, a special needs parent, spread the word quickly to invite other Montgomery families.  There were around 26 family members and 10 Police Officers able to attend this first-ever event.  They were joined by Montgomery’s Deputy Mayor Catherine Gural. Montgomery Police wanted the kids to get to know them and become more comfortable around them, which could be reassuring during a future emergency response.  Mission accomplished as evidenced by the smiles and great time had by all! Montgomery Police would like to do more outreach and organize other future events.  If you have a loved one with special needs and would like 9-11 dispatch and local emergency responders to be informed, please register via the Special Needs Form at https://twp.montgomery.nj.us/special-needs-form/
