Full-time position with benefits package.   Starting hourly rate is $17.99 per hour.  A valid NJ Driver’s License and NJ residency/unless exempted are required. 

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks including manual labor and some operation of automotive and power-driven equipment, in the maintenance of roads, drainage systems, sewer systems, sewage treatment plants, parks and public areas and buildings.  Works under the direct supervision of the Roads Foreman, or other appropriately designated supervisor, who lays out the details of specific assignments or establishes routine procedures which are followed. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Loads, lifts and moves supplies, furniture and equipment;
  • Digs trenches and does manual grading;
  • Collects rubbish and other refuse;
  • Cuts grass, trims hedges, waters lawns, flowers and vegetable beds;
  • Loads/unloads trucks;
  • Shovels snow, gravel and sand;
  • Whitewashes walls;
  • Mixes cement and mortar;
  • Places forms used in concrete work;
  • Cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines and weeds;
  • Cuts down trees, digs out stumps of trees / digs out and destroys poisonous vines, weeds and undergrowth;
  • Weeds flower beds;
  • Pries and hammers apart sections of wall and roof;
  • Works on athletic fields (lining, marking, repairing equipment);
  • Loads debris into truck for removal;
  • Sorts, piles and cleans salvageable brick, stone, lumber and metal work;
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the Department, office or related units;
  • Works overtime as required;
  • Must be available for snowplowing and salting, as required;
  • Performs other work as required or assigned; may be required to work with other Divisions of Public Works.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group;
  • work well with both fellow staff and supervisory personnel;
  • understand and carry-out oral and written instructions
  • perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time
  • work under varying (and sometimes extreme) temperatures and weather condition

Required Education/Certification/License

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training in public or private sector which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the job
