Montgomery Township, Somerset, NJ is all about community. We have a rich history, excellent schools, great neighborhoods & lovely parks/open space.

Montgomery Township is suburban-style residential community which has succeeded in retaining much of the charm of its rural and agrarian history, preserving one-third of its acreage as open space and farmland. The township boasts hundreds of historic homes and buildings, clean waterways, and scenic roads and trails.

See the Montgomery Guide below to learn about municipal departments and services.

Montgomery is one of 21 municipalities in Somerset County and is governed by a five-member Township Committee, whose members are elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis. At reorganizational meetings every January, the committee chooses one of its five members to serve as Mayor for the year, and another to serve as Deputy Mayor.

Montgomery Township can be difficult to find on maps, which tend to show the names of its postal districts (Belle Mead, Blawenburg, Princeton, Skillman), and historic villages (Bridgepoint, Dutchtown, Harlingen). Rocky Hill Borough was once a part of Montgomery Township, until 1889 when it became an independent municipality.

Excellent sources for additional information about Montgomery’s present and past are the Montgomery Township Planning Department, the Van Harlingen Historical Society, the Montgomery Friends of Open Space, the Montgomery Veterans Committee, and the Millstone Valley Preservation Coalition.
